Peter and I ride to his home in complete silence.

When we left the restaurant, he called a car service and asked me if I wanted to go to my house. I shook my head no. Somewhere in that restroom corridor I lost my voice and I still have not found it. I know where it is, but if I retrieve it now, the only sounds it will make are sobs. I’m not ready for that. Peter told me he would take me to his home and that was the last thing either of us said. I lay in his lap, and he drapes his jacket over me. He rubs my back, and I fall into a short slumber.

When I awake, the sight of his home on the Upper East Side temporarily snaps me out of my funk. He lives on East 62nd Street. I know this beaux-Arts style building well; I bill a few of the firm’s clients to neighboring addresses. We also meet our clients in their home offices when they request it. I never complain about that part of my job, I love seeing how the other half lives. This brother is packing serious dough.

Peter quickly slips out of the car, and the driver comes around to open my door. Peter greets me with an inviting hand and a strong shoulder to lean on. A butler welcomes us inside the splendid townhouse. My eyes zero in on the sweeping ivory marble staircase with decorative wrought iron and brass balustrades. When I’m not in court or making shea butters; I’m reading home design magazines. I’m obsessed with the immaculate properties they showcase. I know an expensive balustrade when I see one. His home is breathtaking, his family room features a massive carved mantel over a wood-burning fireplace. How can he afford this?

I turn to face him. “Peter. Help me understand. You live in a pre-war townhouse on one of the most expensive streets in Manhattan. I know a chemists’ salary can’t support this lifestyle. Tell me now, am I entering an episode of Breaking Bad? Are you cooking Meth on the side? Are you moving weight?”

He breaks out into a booming laugh. I wish I felt like laughing. Peter notices I’m not laughing and stops.

“Ok let’s talk.” He leads me into the gorgeous family room. “Have a seat, Would you like something to drink?”

I nod, but I don’t sit. “Wine would be great. Red if you have it.”

He winks. “Your wish is my command.” He walks into the kitchen leaving me to admire the room. First, I’m standing on ivory and brass colored malachite and mosaic floors that look original to the house. This townhome has got to be at least 100 years old. I walk over to his enormous windows and look out onto Central Park. The ceilings are at least fifteen feet high. Stunning!

Peter returns with a bottle of wine and two glasses. He leads me to a comfortable-looking ivory and gold couch and sits next to me.
